The 24th of April brings the start of another season of cricket here at West Bretton and as Chairman I can safely say that the ground and facilities have never looked better. The committee - plus a small army of dedicated lads - have remained busy during the close season to get us off to a great start.
Ground improvements have been on going and money has been spent on drainage in a further attempt to clear the ground of the problem with water pooling. Early signs are encouraging and the outfield does appear to be drying out.
Last year I spoke of my pride in having two Junior sides operating out of our club. Well, our thanks have to be extended to Ian Naylor and Richard Smith as this section goes from strength to strength. The success last term has seen us double to four teams, namely - Under 11’s, under 15’s and two under 13’s . We will have some form of cricket nearly every day of the week. Hopefully now we can tap into the grants that are available.
Fundraising, as ever, remains a key focus of myself and the committee -so please support our functions this season and make 2010 a financial and enjoyable success. We have a small number of opportunities for people to join our monthly 100 club, so you will need to move fast to avoid missing out.
Umpires again remain an area for West Bretton to work on; however, this season we should be turning out from time to time a compliment of 4 - Martin Day, Malcolm Dodd, myself plus a new recruit in Mark Lodge.
In previous seasons we have had support from local businesses and held several corporate fixtures - this needs to continue, along with a drive to get sponsorship for match balls. Please let the committee know if you or your work place can help.
So please join us on match days, practise nights and social events to discover what you have been missing.
Finally… Anne and I will be moving on at the end this season. I have enjoyed every minute of my time at this great club and I wish you all every success for the future.
